Now the waiting is until all Internet providers and all record labels have done what Virgin and Universal have done. Also what is still missing is payment per artist based on download statistics.

Oproep aan de gemeente Nijmegen: Haal alstublieft de blokkade voor motorrijders weg van de Waaldijk! Nee, ik rijd zelf geen motor. Ik heb niet eens iets met motoren.
Een van de voordelen van wonen met de Betuwe in de achtertuin (Volgens de makelaars die hier huizen verkopen tenminste. Als ik uit het achterraam kijk zie ik gewoon andere vinexhuizen.) is dat je dicht bij de rivier woont en dus in principe lekker kunt wandelen over de dijk. Wel oppassen voor gemotoriseerd verkeer daar en om die reden heeft de gemeente Nijmegen een stuk van de Waaldijk afgesloten voor auto's en motoren. Vanaf dat moment konden motorbezetelaars dus niet verder over de dijk en moesten ze bij ons door de straat. Ergo, probleem niet opgelost, wel verplaatst. We hadden nu niet alleen last van motoren als we over de dijk wandelden of fietsten, maar het hele weekend...
Echter, toen had de gemeente Nijmegen bedacht dat het toch wel heel kwalijk was dat al die motoren door haar mooie nieuwe, succesvolle vinex scheurden. De oplossing was volgens de gemeente Nijmegen een bord verboden voor motorrijders. De gemeente Nijmegen had echter niet de moeite genomen zich te verplaatsen in de beleving van de dijktoermotorrijder of de aanwonende. De motorvriend komt nu gezwind aangereden over de Waaldijk en ziet daar een bord doodlopende weg, die ze op een of andere manier trouwens wel altijd zien. De gemotoriseerde tweewielhobbyist kijkt vervolgens om zich heen en ziet de afslag van de dijk af die naar de mooie Nijmeegse vinex leidt. Ok, dan ga ik daar heen denkt ie. Maar daar staat een bord verboden voor motorrijders. Hij zou dus terug moeten rijden tot de eerstevolgende afslag de dijk weer af. De gemeente Nijmegen heeft dus effectief een motorfuik gemaakt! Chapeau!
Nu blijkt dat motorliefhebbers borden verboden in te rijden veel slechter waarnemen dan borden doodlopende weg. Misschien heeft het iets te maken met de helm en de vorm van het vizier en de vorm van het bord of zo. Waarschijnlijker is echter dat het heeft te maken met consequenties van het inrijden van zo'n weg. Edoch, er rijden nog ongeveer evenveel motoren door onze straat. Het verschil is echter dat ik me nu groen en geel erger aan "al die" motoren, terwijl ik me er voorheen nooit zo aan gestoord had, want ze mochten daar immers gewoon rijden!
Vandaar dus gemeente Nijmegen, haal alstublieft de wegafzetting op de dijk weer weg, of in ieder geval het bord, want u wijst mij nu alleen op een mogelijke ergernis waar ik me helemaal niet van bewust was en helpen doet het geen barst! In de cognitiewetenschap heet dit verschijnsel "priming" en wordt vaak geillustreerd met de uitspraak: "Denk nu niet aan Pino uit Sesamstraat" of iets dergelijks. Of je wilt of niet je ziet meteen een grote blauwe, sukkel van een vogel voor je...
Dit alles kan ik uit eerste hand bevestigen, want vandaag heb ik bij wijze van goed-burger-zijn eens zo'n motormuis aangesproken toen ik daar met mijn zoontje liep te wandelen. Deze ontkende eerst dat hij het bord had gezien (zie boven) en vertelde me vervolgens met een glimlach dat hij naar Bemmel moest en dus "lekker doorreed". Kent u de film Falling Down...? Echt de meest gruwelijke martelscenario's gingen door mijn hoofd en ik heb het niet over waterboarding!
Ecosystems are very complex, we (myself in any case) do not understand them enough to make 100% accurate predictions about how they react and to fully realize the mechanisms at work.
Today it struck me that oil sits in the earth for millions of years, so it must be a substance that Earth can do nothing much with, a waste product of dead trees, algen and other vegetation. But Earth has its ways to deal with waste products, in the general fashion that life is only possible when there is life.
In this case us, humans, play an interesting role. Humans pump up oil and use it to drive combustion engines, like cars. Cars produce CO2, amongst other things. Trees need CO2, they use it to make more tree and trees end up as oil again finally. Some of the CO2 humans produce is actually used by trees. Maybe driving around in cars is even needed to free up carbon, because all carbon would become oil in the end? I do not know of another process that turns oil into CO2.
Pretty good ecospheric recycling story so far, but the downside is that we make way too much CO2, so the earth heats up (at least most scientists say so). But maybe trees start growing faster too, and algen? For Earth it may not be so bad after all. We may experience some nature disasters, like raised sea level and earth quakes, but that is not a problem for Earth, only for humans and other animal life.
ps. Since I am not an ecologist and therefore may have made a huge misinterpretation, let me know...
Nadat uit de eerste stemming niet de gewenste 80% werd verkregen voor de verkoop van Essent aan RWE (Provincie Noord-Brabant was tegen), is nu opnieuw gestemd... en nu mag het wel!
VRAAG HET DAN OOK NIET!!!!!!!
Misschien moeten ze nog een keer stemmen, want het is me onduidelijk waarom de tweede stemronde beter is dan de eerste. Moet het misschien drie keer, of moet het altijd een even aantal zijn, of een aantal uit de fibonaccireeks, of een gemiddelde uit alle stemronden??
Als toch al duidelijk is dat Essent verkocht moet worden val elkaar dan niet lastig met allerlei wajangopvoeringen...
Omdat wij weinig vrije tijd hebben en die liever niet besteden aan afstompend en saai huishoudelijk werk zoals stofzuigen, heb ik hiervoor een typische mannenoplossing bedacht. Dit is em!
Like an information architect humans are continuously recognizing and using patterns.
As we age, we learn. A lot of it (maybe all) are patterns. Like how to walk. Or the child that knows that it can get its jacket when dad puts his on. Or the project manager that knows when to raise a storm flag for a project. Or the chess player that knows when to move his queen.
The use is in knowing what is coming: swing your left leg forward once you put your right one down, put your jacket on and go outside when dad puts his jacket on, a deadline that will be missed when all teams are in the red zone, chess mate in 10 moves when he moves queen to D4 now. What is coming you know when you have recognized a (correct!) pattern. You can predict how events will continue outside the boundaries of your sensory input and act accordingly.
As we age, some things seem to change though. A child seems to recognize new patterns all the time. There is still a lot to learn. But this is also because a child does not know a lot of simple patterns yet. They are quick wins. I am convinced that there are virtually endless patterns for us to learn, but they vary in complexity. The more complex patterns come when we get older, also because they are comprised of other patterns.
For babies this has been investigated (See Oei ik groei! for Dutch). There appear to be 9 mental jumps in a baby's development. You can see these as patterns a baby learns to recognize and use: the first rudimentary patterns (a hand), seamless transitions (one tone to another), events (taking something from one hand in the other, relations (a lemon tastes sour), categories (a horse), sequences (pick up a key an stick it in a lock), programs (dusting the living room), principles (meta knowledge about programs) and systems (meta knowlegde about principles).
To start with, Twitter is not a completely new concept really. Back in university we were all on IRC and we could post messages so that everyone could know what we were thinking about. Later came ICQ (still using it btw) and so on off course.
What is essentially different is that IRC is like a lot of rooms (chatrooms) where you hear what everyone is saying (IRC message) per definition/no choice. Whereas Twitter is like one big room (twitterspace) where you select the people that you want to listen to (twitter message). In fact you make the rooms in twitterspace yourself. ICQ on the other hand is for sending messages one on one (small confession rooms).
Why won't that do? The requirements for free: a. I want to be able to create multiple groups of people to address (rooms) with size one to many, like my family, my project colleagues, my football team, my closest friends, one person, everyone etc. Then I can target my messages more precisely. I can shout into any specific room. I need to be able to create and maintain the groups myself. Rooms can be hierarchical. b. I want to be able to send full size e-mails with all possible attachments. Only then can Twitter replace my e-mail. Yes, this stuff will some day replace e-mail! c. I need a mobile device to do this. d. I need to be able to filter the incoming traffic. I want to leave a room sometimes. For example, when I am at work I do not want to receive messages from my football team. e. People in my sociosphere need to be able to see my status when I am not listening (see d, when I am not in a room) so that my football coach can send me a one on one message when it is really important.
This will finally close the gap between chat, sms, and e-mail, I hope. Personally I need it, because the number of channels is getting too big for me to keep track of!
